![]() ![]() Objectiveĥ: To develop opportunities for community residents to share traditional knowledge for sustainable living related to the use of natural resources and environmental management and individual, family, and community health and to create strategies for implementing traditional approaches to sustainability. Objective 4: Is that staff, collaborating partners, and community members will provide at least two educational opportunities each semester and two additional opportunities in the summer. Objective 3: The Leech Lake Sustainable Living Program will strengthen collaborations with Minnesotas 1862 Institutions, University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Extension Programs on the county, regional and state levels. Objective 2: The Advisory Committee, program staff and stakeholder communities will initiate, review and continue to develop strategic planning for each subsequent year thus allowing the project to continue meeting community needs and fulfilling the land grant responsibilities of the Leech Lake Tribal College in the area of community outreach. Goals / Objectives Objective 1: Is to redevelop an Advisory Committee to meet on a quarterly basis to create community support, develop initiatives and a communications network for the Leech Lake Sustainable Living Program. The purpose of the project is to empower individuals and families through partipation in a variety of programming and services that areĮducational including financial literacy, understanding cultural identity through language, arts and crafts and to explore health and wellness including addiction, depression, diet, exersise and disease. It is important that the Leech Lake Sustainable Living Program, located within the Center for Career Development, continues to provide access to culturally appropriate information and resources that will address the critical need of the Anishinaabe people of the Leech Lake Reservation. Outside agencies have been ineffective in addressing changes in lifestyle, diet and behavior given the cultural differences in approach and perspective. ![]() Health is also severely impacted manifesting in epidemic rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver disease and obesity. Non Technical Summary Poverty and a history of economic depression for the Leech Lake Reservation have a casual effect on the people resulting in high incidents of alcoholism, drug dependency, child abuse, neglect, high unemployment, sub-standard housing conditions and violent crimes.
